Electric bikes are here to stay and are becoming increasingly visible on the streets of Portugal. They generate curiosity, but also some doubts and prejudices. Are they “only for lazy people”? Do the batteries last long? Is the price worth it? Let’s debunk some of the most common myths and reveal the reality of riding with electric assistance.

“E-bikes are only for people who don't like cycling”
This is perhaps the most common myth, stemming from a lack of understanding of how electric bikes work. Electric assistance does not replace effort; it simply helps control the intensity. You still have to pedal, but you can adjust the level of assistance. The result is that electric bikes enable you to go further, tackle climbs with less effort, and make daily journeys accessible for people of all ages and fitness levels.

“The batteries don't last long”
The range of an e-bike depends on several factors, including the model, the route, and the user. However, it is common for e-bikes to exceed a range of 70 km without needing a recharge—some members of the Beeq team have even traveled 120 km on our bikes! By following a few simple precautions—such as charging the battery correctly and avoiding frequent complete discharges—you can ensure the battery’s longevity.

“They are too expensive”
While the initial investment may be higher than that of a conventional bicycle, electric bikes are significantly cheaper than owning a car, especially when considering costs associated with traffic, gasoline, tolls, and lost time. For daily use, the financial return (and improvement in quality of life) can come quickly.

“They are only good for the city”
Electric bikes are not limited to urban routes; there are specific models designed for mountains and trails. For those who enjoy exploring backroads, natural parks, or taking weekend trips with family, electric assistance opens up new possibilities without turning every climb into a strenuous challenge.

The truth is simple: electric bikes are not a “shortcut” or an unnecessary luxury. They are a practical, sustainable, and enjoyable way to integrate cycling into daily life. Whether for commuting, leisure, or tourism, e-bikes are changing how people in Portugal get around. Electric bikes don’t diminish the pleasure of cycling—they provide even more reasons to enjoy it.
